From paper merchant to medical technology pioneer: The story of Leonhard Lang began in 1872 with a paper business in Innsbruck. More than 150 years later, the company is a leading provider in the field of medical technology. For Leonhard Lang GmbH, the highest quality is the top priority across the development and production of ECG electrodes and other medical technology products, as well as in specialized machinery manufacturing—backed by continuous research and development and state-of-the-art process management.

From Paper to App – Optimized Manufacturing Processes

Faced with paper-based processes, manual data entry, and a lack of real-time data, Leonhard Lang recognized the potential for digitalization in manufacturing; today, the company manages its production using a custom shop-floor data collection (SFDC) solution built on the low-code platform engomo. Whereas production orders were previously distributed as printouts, filled out by hand by shop-floor staff, and then manually entered into the systems by production management, the entire process is now digitized and handled via an app. Employees log in at the machines and use the Windows app to view a clear overview of pending production orders, including relevant details such as status, target quantity, and item information.

Once a job has been selected, materials are validated via lot number or barcode scan before the production data entry (PDE) process is initiated at the touch of a button. During this process, operators also record setup times, scrap quantities, and production volumes. Downtime is automatically added to the total job duration by the engomo app and allocated proportionally across personnel, machine, and technician time. Before completing the production order, employees document the produced cartons and exact unit counts to ensure seamless batch traceability—a critical requirement for regulatory documentation compliance. Finally, the comment function allows for notes regarding the job to be added, while re-authentication confirms that the product lot was manufactured according to specifications and that product tolerance limits were met.

Seamless integration and process-optimized role management

"With engomo, we have digitized our workflows in such a way that processes—including those spanning different departments—have been simplified and standardized."

describes Tobias Mair, a business process development specialist at Leonhard Lang, regarding the benefits of the application.

Thanks to engomo’s extensive integration capabilities, the machines and the existing ERP system were connected without complication. Data captured during the production process is temporarily stored in engomoPersistence—engomo’s data storage component—and made immediately available. Role management within the shop floor data collection (SFDC) application allows production management to access the captured process information; after review, they can approve the data at the touch of a button, thereby triggering synchronization between engomoPersistence and the connected Comarch ERP Enterprise system. At the same time, the solution generates a comprehensive PDF report—including all comments—and archives it in the ERP system in an audit-proof manner. This has completely eliminated the need for manual data entry. Furthermore, the app’s admin area enables administrators at Leonhard Lang to manage access credentials, users, and roles, assign machines to specific production areas, and modify designations.

An app that creates real added value

The digitalization of the manufacturing process at Leonhard Lang forms the basis for real-time controlling based on constantly up-to-date data.

"Our controlling department can view all data in the system on a daily basis, providing an optimal foundation for developing further strategies."

Tobias Mair, Business Process Development Specialist at Leonhard Lang

Leonhard Lang is currently using the solution on nine machines across two manufacturing areas. However, this is just the beginning: the plan is to equip around 100 production units with the app in the future. In addition, the company intends to extend the solution to all production departments in order to further drive process optimization and digitalization.
